Bermuda Premier looks forward to working with new British PM

Bermudian Premier David Burt has congratulated Rishi Sunak on his appointment as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In a statement, Burt said: “I look forward to working with the new Prime Minister and his Ministers in Bermuda’s interests. Next month’s Joint Ministerial Council will be the first opportunity to engage with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office teams since the change in Administration.”

Sunak took over as prime minister from Liz Truss who resigned after just over 40 days in office.

She had come under pressure from within the Conservative Party after her finance secretary unveiled unpopular tax cuts that rocked the UK’s economy and caused the currency value to decline.

The 42-year-old is the first person of colour and south Asian to be appointed as the UK’s prime minister.

Opposition leader, Cole Simons, also congratulated the new PM.

“At a time when the country desperately needs stability, Mr Sunak appears to bring a steady hand to the role, along with his professional experience in international finance and merchant banking,” he said in a statement.

“This is also a very historic moment for the UK, as he is not only the first Asian Prime Minister, he is also Britain’s first Prime Minister of colour.”
