Dominica: China gifts government $20m for housing
2 mins read

The Government of Dominica has received a gift of $20 million from the People’s Republic of China to continue building homes for citizens.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking to state-owned DBS radio on Monday said housing continues to be a major priority for his administration.
He said the funds will help the government keep its promise of providing housing to several Dominicans.
“Notwithstanding the fact that we’ve built thousands of homes in Dominica and we have retrofitted thousands of homes making them resilient, there are still many pockets across Dominica where people are still waiting for homes.
“There are people who have firm commitments from us and so I want to say to them, as I indicated in the Parliament in my budget contribution, that we will be making some monies available to address housing,” Skerrit said.
The Dominica leader is also optimistic that this cash injection will benefit contractors and suppliers of building materials when the projects begin.
He praised the People’s Republic of China for being a “major benefactor” to Dominica highlighting that China is currently assisting the island with the construction of six schools which are at various stages of completion.
Under its housing revolution programme, the government of Dominica is hoping to build 5,000 houses for citizens by 2030.
