VIDEO: Broadcasters urged to develop and export local content

Caribbean countries can earn significant hard currency revenues through the export of local content, according to Shola Taylor, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO).

Taylor made the remarks while noting that the switch from analogue to digital television broadcast in the region presents a big opportunity for local content creators looking to produce and distribute original programmes.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Digital Broadcasting Caribbean Forum 2017, at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, Taylor said “Too often we look for content outside of the region to broadcast to our people.

“I want to ask people of the Caribbean not only to develop the local content within the region but to also export it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator Ruel Reid warned that there can be no further delays on digital broadcasting in the region.

“Or else the technology will run away and leave us,” Reid said at the launch of the forum, noting that the event presented a perfect opportunity for regional stakeholders to share ideas.
